There’s a lot to notice about what isn’t seen at Blacknall.
When people enter the church and hear their shoes squeaking on spotless floors or find neatly arranged chairs and clean carpet in the Fellowship Hall, they encounter some of the ways Blacknall’s facilities management staff keep spaces prepped and ready each week. Hours of behind-the-scenes work Monday through Friday mean that when members, attenders, and visitors arrive on Sunday mornings, the church is in the same beautiful shape week in and week out.
That’s thanks to the Breedens — Alonso, CeCe, Sharon, and Stanley. Even if you haven’t met them yet, you’ve felt the impact of their work, like many staff across the country recognized this week as part of Housekeeping Appreciation Week. Since 2022, Blacknall has been cared for by five members of the Breeden family. Along with the current four, Alonso, Sharon, and Stanley’s sister Phyllis previously worked here. CeCe is family by marriage.
“The thing that sticks out to me about this crew is they are so faithful — to us and to God,” said Cindy Chapman, who leads Blacknall’s Guild, which helps care for the church and office space. “I just don’t think people realize how much time and effort it takes to keep things clean around a building like this, how much it takes to keep things presentable and ready for so many people.”
The Breedens excel in the details, combining their witness of faith with how they care for Blacknall and its people. When restrictions eased during the COVID pandemic, Sharon personally disinfected every toy in the nursery each week, so they were safe for kids. When special events, weddings, or funerals are scheduled on short notice, the Breedens will adjust their schedules or come in on days off to ensure spaces are ready. Every Tuesday morning, before Blacknall staff hold a weekly meeting in The Parlor, CeCe prays over the space. They also offer clothes and food to unhoused people who spend time near the church.
“They just love God and love people so well,” said Director of Operations Faith Weiskirch. “They put care and effort into everything they do, and it shows how their love pours over into how they serve our building.”
Walk by the Breedens’ workspace in The Commons and you’ll get a sense of how Christ makes a difference in their lives — and in turn, how they impact ours. On the front of their door, you’ll find a printout of a gospel centered “Thought of the Week” reflection along with Scripture. It’s not uncommon to find a devotional book open inside.
“God sent us to be servants to His house, so we are a service to Him,” CeCe said. “It’s a special gift to have a heart to this this work because not everyone wants to do it, but we enjoy being here to clean God’s house.”
“We show appreciation for this space because of what this church does for its community,” Alonso added, noting how Blacknall supports ministry partners that feed those in need and protects Durham’s vulnerable. “The church gives back, so for us it’s about giving back, too.”
