As a follow-up to our Discipleship Weekend sessions, all are invited to a three-week series designed to help you explore the goals of financial discipleship — learning to place our trust and love in God more than money. Classes will be led by Associate Pastor David Dunderdale and meet from 7 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 1, 8, and 15, in the Parlor.
Participants will receive excerpts from three books to read before each class. Sessions will be interactive and rooted in discussion. In week one, we’ll consider why it can be so difficult to recognize our own idolatry around money. From there, we’ll explore God’s economy of generosity and reflect on how financial discipleship shapes the way we spend, save, and give. Register on Church Center to join.
July 1: “Counterfeit Gods” by Tim Keller
Keller explores the sin of idolatry and the ways money can become an idol in our lives. Together, we’ll discuss how money can shape our sense of power, security, and self-worth while helping one another identify where financial idolatry may be at work in our own lives.
July 8: “Practicing the King’s Economy” by Michael Rhodes and Robby Holt
Using the story of Rahab in Jericho, we’ll explore the contrast between the world’s transactional economy and the generosity-centered values of the “King’s Economy.”
July 15: “The Golden Cow” by John White
Written nearly 50 years ago, this book names the idol of materialism in the church and prophetically calls Christians to repentance. We’ll discuss whether the warnings White offered in 1979 still resonate — and how they might challenge the church today.
