Invocation

Eternal God,

You have called us to be one body just as you yourself are one. We gather from many different places this Sunday morning and ask that by the power of the Holy Spirit you would join us together that we may show the unity of your church. Make us a people with one heart and one mind so that we may freely worship you, the risen Christ. Amen.

Isaiah 65:17-25

“See, I will create
    new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered,
    nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever
    in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight
    and its people a joy.
19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem
    and take delight in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying
    will be heard in it no more.

20 “Never again will there be in it
    an infant who lives but a few days,
    or an old man who does not live out his years;
the one who dies at a hundred
    will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach a hundred
    will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses and dwell in them;
    they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them,
    or plant and others eat.
For as the days of a tree,
    so will be the days of my people;
my chosen ones will long enjoy
    the work of their hands.
23 They will not labor in vain,
    nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;

says the Lord.

Call to Confession

The God we worship is in the business of new creation. The prophet Isaiah paints a vision of God’s future where there is no weeping or distress and where wolves and lambs feed together. The end of the story has been written, and it tells of the day where we will build houses and plant vineyards while God himself dwells alongside us. In the knowledge of God’s great love for us, let us kneel and confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession

Lord, you abound in steadfast love and in faithfulness and we are grateful to be known as your people. Forgive us for the ways that we choose to live as if we do not belong to you. We continually choose not to follow your Son in the way of humility and self-giving, and rather live for our own selfish interests. By the power of your Holy Spirit, open our eyes to the beauty of your love so that we might worship you and extend your love to the world. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, anyone who in Christ is a new creation! The old has gone, the new has come and all this is from God.

Here the good news, in Jesus Christ you are forgiven.

Mark 3.1-6

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

We worship you God, Lord of the Sabbath, who rules and reigns over all creation. Give us eyes to see and ears to hear the work you are doing in our world. Soften our hearts and make us attentive towards your healing work.

The prophet Isaiah testifies that you hear us while we speak and that you answer us before we call out to you (Isaiah 65:24). We are thankful that you hear us and that you invite us bring the entirety of who we are before you. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, help us to respond to the grace that you have given to us through lives of worship and service.

This week, we are especially reminded by the verdict of the Derek Chauvin trial of the way that violence and injustice continues to permeate our world, our country, and our communities. We lament the horrors of racism that continue to ravage our country and we pray that this verdict might be a small step towards equity and healing in our nation. Break our hearts for what breaks yours, O Lord, and make us agents of your reconciling work in the world as we seek to demonstrate your kingdom on earth. Help us to stand in solidarity and love with those who have been marginalized in our communities and who have been the victims of systems of violence and oppression.

We pray for our church during this time of transition and we ask that you be with our pastors and our session as they continue to think of safe and creative ways to gather us together for worship. Make this summer a season of growth for our church as we seek to serve you faithfully in the city of Durham.

Make us a people known by our love.

We pray together, now, just as you taught us to pray...
