Invocation

The psalmist invites us: “Sing praises to the LORD, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name.  For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime.  Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” [Psalm 30:4,5] Lord, we are here to sing your praises.  We feel like we have been through a long, dark night with much weeping.  May we experience your joy dawning upon us as we give thanks to your holy name.  Amen.

Song | As the Sun Doth Daily Rise

As the sun doth daily rise,
Bright'ning all the morning skies,
So to Thee with one accord
Lift we up our hearts, O Lord!

Refrain
Praise we, with the heavn'ly host,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

Day by day provide us food,
For from Thee come all things good;
Strength unto our souls afford
From Thy living Bread, O Lord!

Be our guard in sin and strife;
Be the leader of our life;
Lest from Thee we stray abroad,
Stay our wayward feet, O Lord!

Scripture Reading | Psalm 22:1-5, 19-31

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me,
    so far from my cries of anguish?
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
    by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
    you are the one Israel praises.
In you our ancestors put their trust;
    they trusted and you delivered them.
To you they cried out and were saved;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
    You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
    save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will declare your name to my people;
    in the assembly I will praise you.
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
    Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or scorned
    the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
    but has listened to his cry for help.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
    before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek the Lord will praise him—
    may your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth
    will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the Lord
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
    all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
    those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him;
    future generations will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness,
    declaring to a people yet unborn:
    He has done it!

Song | The Lord is My Salvation

The grace of God has reached for me
And pulled me from the raging sea
And I am safe on this solid ground
The Lord is my salvation

I will not fear when darkness falls
His strength will help me scale these walls
I'll see the dawn of the rising sun
The Lord is my salvation

Chorus

Who is like the Lord our God
Strong to save faithful in love
My debt is paid and the victory won
The Lord is my salvation

In times of waiting times of need
When I know loss when I am weak
I know His grace will renew these days
The Lord is my salvation

Glory be to God the Father
Glory be to God the Son
Glory be to God the Spirit
The Lord is our salvation

Call to Confession

“Who is like the Lord our God?  Strong to save...”  We are not strong to save.  We try to fix ourselves, to fix those around us, to fix our nation and we end up exhausted and in a worse mess than we started.  If we are awake and alert to what is happening around us, then our natural response will be weeping and despair.  If we are awake and alert to what is happening in our own lives and our persistent sinfulness, then our natural response will also be weeping and despair.  But the psalmist reminds us,

“Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”  In our darkness a great light has dawned.  He is the Light of the World and in him we find mercy, grace, hope and salvation.  To this Jesus, let us kneel to confess our sin, our darkness, and our great need so that we might know that he is our Salvation.

Prayer of Confession

Dear Jesus, we confess to you our need.  We confess to you that we can see so clearly the faults, the sinfulness, the arrogance, and the selfishness of others.  At the same time, we can so easily ignore or excuse the very same things in ourselves.  And yet, if we stop and get a clear-eyed look at ourselves we can so quickly fall into despair and depression.  So, we kneel to confess that we need you, Jesus.  We need you to transform our hearts, to transform our desires, to renew our minds.  We need your Holy Spirit to convict us of our sin, to lead us into repentance, and to convince us of your grace and mercy for us.  We need you to empower us to live lives full of grace and truth that bring glory and honor to you.  Fill us with the joy that comes with the morning.  Amen

Assurance of Pardon

Beloved, this is the joy that comes with the morning: Jesus’ face is shining upon you, full of love and delight to be with you!  Because it is true.  In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

            Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Ben Davison

Mark 1.35-39

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

Song of Response |  Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

O soul are you weary and troubled
No light in the darkness you see
There's light for a look at the Savior
And life more abundant and free

Through death into life everlasting
He passed and we follow Him there
O'er us sin no more hath dominion
For more than conqu'rors we are

Chorus

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
Oh His grace

His Word shall not fail you He promised
Believe Him and all will be well
Then go to a world that is dying
His perfect salvation to tell

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Would you like to share a prayer request? Submit your request here.

(As you pray the following petitions, you are encouraged to pause and lift to the Lord particular concerns or people or events. Read prayer requests from Blacknall members and ministry partners here.)

Father, we come before you, following the example of our Lord Jesus who rose up early to pray.  Before we rush to share with you all of the cares and concerns of our hearts, we want to thank you.  We thank you for this time of worship.  We thank you revealing yourself to us in Jesus and in your Word.  We thank you for the hope you have given to us that is steadfast and sure.

Lord Jesus, we thank you that you had a burden that all people might hear the good news of your Kingdom.  We pray that we might share in that burden.  We pray that we, too, would not be content with only ourselves knowing the goodness of your Gospel.  Fill us with a passion to go to people who are not in a church, to people who don’t know you, to people who have been wounded by the church, and help us to find a way to communicate with them the goodness of who you are.

Lord, we pray by name now for those who are lost...
For those who are wounded...
For those who are sick...
For those who are grieving...
For those who have wandered away from you...

We pray for those who have left home and country to share the message of your Kingdom...
We pray for those in our midst who are preparing to teach and share the message of your Kingdom...
We pray for our children and youth that they may catch a vision of your Kingdom and hear your invitation to follow Jesus...
We pray for one another that we might all participate in your Kingdom work...

 In all of this, may we never stop coming to you in prayer, praying as we have been taught...

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Benediction

Song | Lord Who Throughout These 40 Days

Lord, who throughout these forty days
For us did fast and pray,
Teach us to overcome our sins,
And close by You to stay.

As You with Satan did contend
And did the vict'ry win,
O give us strength in You to fight,
In You to conquer sin.

And through these days of penitence,
And through Your Passion-tide,
For evermore, in life and death,
O Lord, with us abide,
O Lord, with us abide!
