Job Opening: Interim Coordinator of Children’s Ministry

Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church is looking for an Interim Coordinator of Children’s Ministry for 15 hours per week. The position will be centered around ministering to the spiritual vitality of our children and their families.

TITLE: Interim Coordinator of Children’s Ministry (CCM) (15 hours per week)

PURPOSE: The Interim Coordinator of Children’s Ministry (CCM) works with the Director of Children’s Ministry (DCM) to disciple children in the way of Jesus, to help adults and children worship together, to integrate children into community life, and to strengthen the home-church partnership. The CCM directs the nursery and coordinates childcare. The CCM provides support for all children’s programming, from birth through fifth grade. At baptism, the congregation pledges its prayers and support to its children; the CCM helps Blacknall fulfill this vow.

SUPERVISION: The supervisor for the Interim CCM will be the Director of Children’s Ministry (DCM). 

RELATIONSHIPS: The Interim CCM is hired by the Session and is accountable to that body through the supervision of the DCM. The CCM will be supervised by and collaborate with the DCM and work with other members of the church staff and the Elder for children and youth, as assigned by the Session.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

I.       Welcoming Children and Families

  • Welcome children to Blacknall, especially those of visitors and new members.

  • Share the vision for Children’s Ministry at Blacknall with families and answer questions.  

II.     Volunteer Support

  • Manage the churchwide signup for Nursery volunteers using the church’s online platform.

    • Compile availability of all members eligible for nursery service.

    • Incorporate new members into the nursery volunteer pool.

  • Assist volunteers in completing required paperwork and training. Complete necessary background checks.

  • Equip approved volunteers to minister effectively in their roles. Orient new volunteers to their role through training on curriculum use, discipline and emergency policies, securing substitutes, etc.                  

  • Work with the DCM to develop and carry out a recruitment plan to recruit an adequate number of volunteers for all children’s programming.

III.   Childcare Management for Church Events

  • Ensure volunteer and paid childcare is available for church events as needed, including Sunday morning worship, Sunday night events, midweek programs, small groups, Women’s Bible Study, and special events.

  • Secure and supervise paid childcare workers as needed to provide childcare. Work with the Director of Operations and Financial Administrator to ensure that all hiring, evaluation, and payroll procedures are followed.

  • Nursery scheduling and management:

    • Open and manage sign-ups through the church’s online platform.

    • Schedule people who don’t sign up based on their stated availability.

    • Send schedule to registered volunteers.

    • Send email and/or text reminders.

    • Manage swaps and last-minute subs for no-shows when necessary.

  • Be present and available to assist with Children’s Ministry programming on Sunday mornings: 

    • Get Nursery desk and printers set up on Sunday mornings.

    • Manage the Nursery desk during one service personally or find someone else to manage it.

IV.     Administration & Church Staff Responsibilities

  • Be present and participate in corporate worship on Sunday mornings and at other times.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings when possible.

SALARY:

JOB REQUIREMENTS:    

  • Committed and mature follower of Jesus Christ.  

  • Member or regular attender of Blacknall or is willing to become a member or attender of Blacknall.

  • Experience (volunteer or professional) working in children’s ministry.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and administrative proficiency.  

  • Deep love and appreciation for children and their families along with an awareness of the particular issues they face.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to build rapport with children, parents, volunteers, and prospective volunteers in the congregation.  

  • Ability to recruit and retain volunteers.  

  • Self-motivated individual who can also function effectively with a team.
