The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will hold a free community concert Friday, May 8, to celebrate the work of Blacknall member Scott Laird, who will soon retire after 25 years at the school. He serves as fine arts chair and instructor of music, conducting the school’s Durham Orchestra and supporting arts programs and instructors across the Durham and Morganton campuses. You’ve also seen him lead worship on Sundays with Blacknall Arts, playing fiddle during services.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the school’s ETC Auditorium off Maryland Avenue (map). Free parking is available in lots surrounding the school. The program will include “Academic Festival Overture,” “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” (with community chorus), an original composition by Scott, and a surprise final number. The event is an opportunity to thank Scott for his years of service while he also celebrates the people at the school and Blacknall who’ve supported him for so long.
If you’d like to join the fun, sign up to join the community chorus for “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place.” For more information or to ask questions, email Scott.
