Call to Worship

Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; Praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;

Praise his holy name.
weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Praise his holy name. (Psalm 30:4-5)

Song | All Who Are Thirsty

All who are thirsty, all who are weak, come to the fountain.
Dip your heart in the stream of life.
Let the pain and the sorrow be wash’d away
in the waves of His mercy as deep cries out to deep.

Come, Lord Jesus, come. (4 times)

Holy Spirit, come. (4 times)

 Song | God With Us

You’ve come to bring peace,
To be Love, to be nearer to us,
You’ve come to bring life,
To be Light, to shine brighter in us.
Oh Emmanuel, God With Us.

Our Deliverer, You are Savior.
In Your presence we find our strength over everything,
Our Redemption, God With Us.
You are God With Us.

You’ve come to be Hope to this world,
For Your honor and name,
And You’ve come to take sin, to bear shame,
And to conquer the grave.
Oh Emmanuel, God With Us.

Our Deliverer, You are Savior.
In Your presence we find our strength over everything,
Our Redemption, God With Us.
You are God With Us.

You are here, You are holy.
We are standing in Your glory.
(repeat)

Our Deliverer, You are Savior.
In Your presence we find our strength over everything,
Our Redemption, God With Us.
You are God With Us.

Scripture Reading | Deuteronomy 5:23-29

(This is Moses speaking to the Israelites. Recall that Moses spoke “face to face” with God, while Israel was terrified at the very idea of interacting with God.)

23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me. 24 And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them. 25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer. 26 For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? 27 Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”

28 The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, “I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good. 29 Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!”

Song | From Depths of Woe

From depths of woe I raise to Thee the voice of lamentation;
Lord, turn a gracious ear to me, and hear my supplication:
If Thou iniquities dost mark our secret sins and misdeeds dark,
O who shall stand before Thee?
O who shall stand before Thee?

Therefore my trust is in the Lord and not in my own merit.
On Him my soul shall rest, His Word upholds my fainting spirit.
His promised mercy is my fort, my comfort, and my sweet support;
I wait for it with patience,
I wait for it with patience.

Though great our sins and sore our woes, His grace much more aboundeth;
His helping love no limit knows, our utmost need it soundeth.
Our Shepherd good and true is He who will at last His Israel free
From all our sin and sorrow,
From all our sin and sorrow,
From all our sin and sorrow.

Words by Martin Luther (originally in German), early 1500s, based on Psalm 130. Music by Christopher Miner, 1997.

Call to Confession

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive us our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Come, let us confess our sins.
1 John 1:8-9

Prayers of Confession

Lord, let us not deceive ourselves. We have sinned, and we need your forgiveness: We have failed to love You. We have failed to love our neighbors. We have failed to love ourselves. Glorify your Son, Jesus Christ, by granting us your mercy; by the Holy Spirit, make us alive with Him. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, it is true!
God has not cast us away – in Christ, we have been gathered together
and adopted as sons and daughters.
In Jesus Christ, you are forgiven – thanks be to God!

Passing the Peace

Text, email, or call a friend and extend the love of Christ to them.

Children’s Blessing | 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is… patient
Love is kind
It does NOT envy
It does NOT boast
It is NOT proud
It does NOT dishonor others
It is NOT self-seeking
It is NOT easily angered
It keeps NO record of wrongs
It does NOT delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth
Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres
Love NEVER fails

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Allan Poole

1 Corinthians 14:1-25
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort. Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church.

13 For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 16 Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? 17 You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is written:

“With other tongues and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”

22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

Song of Response | Speak, O Lord

Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
To receive the food of Your holy word.
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
That the light of Christ might be seen today
In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
All Your purposes, for Your glory.

Teach us Lord full obedience,
Holy reverence, true humility.
Test our thoughts and our attitudes
In the radiance of Your purity.
Cause our faith to rise, cause our eyes to see
Your majestic love and authority.
Words of power that can never fail;
Let their truth prevail over unbelief.

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us.
Truths unchanged from the dawn of time,
That will echo down through eternity.
And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises;
And by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.
Speak, O Lord, ‘til your church is built
As You fill the earth with Your glory.

Focus on Mission | Know Your Neighbor Month

This year for “Know Your Neighbor” month, we encourage you to read the book The Art of Neighboring. Learn more here.

Prayers of Thanksgiving & Intercession

We celebrate You, the risen Lord. You appeared to terrified disciples, and spoke peace. You showed them your wounds. You gave the Holy Spirit and they were Your witnesses.

Help us to be Your witnesses in this unusual time. Help us to see that you are near. Thank you for the gifts we enjoy in this season, and help us have compassion on the many who suffer in this season.

Give us generous hearts for those who are not like us. "You say, rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn." Help us to see that you are near. Show us our parts to play with the gifts you have given us. Keep calling us to pursue the truth, and to act in love.

Give answer as we pray:  Lord, have mercy.

  • For all those in public office,  may they use their authority to safeguard the well-being and dignity of human life. Lord, have mercy.

  • For scientists and public health leaders,  may you help them apply their skill with integrity to prevent and heal the effects of the virus. Lord, have mercy.

  • For leaders in business and finance, may they lead with wisdom and compassion, remembering all those who are affected by economic decisions.

  • For those who are suffering in mind or body (especially ______________________), may they know your healing, comfort and care. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who provide care (especially __________________), give them strength, courage, and rest. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who are grieving (especially ____________________), may they lament and receive comfort in your love. Lord, have mercy

  • For the church, that our willingness to love others in your name would bring hope to our world. Lord, have mercy.

Let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father...

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Benediction | Goodie Bell

Song | Salvation Belongs to Our God

Salvation belongs to our God,
Who sits upon the throne,
And unto the Lamb....

Praise and Glory, Wisdom and Thanks,
Honor and Power and Strength
Be to our God forever and ever! (3x)
Amen!

And we the redeemed shall be strong
In purpose and unity,
Declaring aloud....

Praise and Glory, Wisdom and Thanks,
Honor and Power and Strength
Be to our God forever and ever! (3x)
Amen!
