Scripture Reading | Psalm 146

Praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord, my soul.
I will praise the Lord all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord their God.
He is the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
he remains faithful forever.
He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets prisoners free,
 the Lord gives sight to the blind,
the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down,
the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the foreigner
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.
10 The Lord reigns forever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the Lord.

Song | The Lord is My Salvation

The grace of God has reached for me,And pulled me from the raging sea;
And I am safe on this solid ground:
The Lord is my salvation.

I will not fear when darkness falls;
His strength will help me scale these walls.
I’ll see the dawn of the rising sun:
The Lord is my salvation.

 Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, and faithful in love.
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won:
The Lord is my salvation.

In times of waiting, times of need,
When I know loss, when I am weak,
I know His grace will renew these days:
The Lord is my salvation.

Who is like the Lord our God?
Strong to save, and faithful in love.
My debt is paid and the vict’ry won:
The Lord is my salvation.

Glory be to God, the Father;
Glory be to God, the Son;
Glory be to God, the Spirit:
The Lord is my salvation.

Call to Confession

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. (1 John 3:2-3) Come, let us confess our sins.

Prayers of Confession

We are slow to praise you, Lord. We have loosed our lips for evil. We have harnessed our tongues to a lie. We do not know how to speak the truth: Jesus Christ is Lord, and we are His servants. For the glory of His name, forgive us. By your Holy Spirit, teach us to worship you. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, it is true!
God has not cast us away – in Christ, we have been gathered together
and adopted as sons and daughters.
In Jesus Christ, you are forgiven – thanks be to God!

Passing the Peace

Text, email, or call a friend and extend the love of Christ to them.

Affirmation of Faith  | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Blessing

1 Corinthians 15:54
Death is swallowed up in victory.

Proclamation of the Word | Allan Poole

1 Corinthians 14:26-40

26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.

29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.

39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

Song of Response | The Servant King

From heaven You came, helpless Babe
Entered our world Your glory veiled,
Not to be served but to serve,
And give Your life that we might live.

This is our God – the Servant King,
He calls us now to follow Him,
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to the Servant King.

There in the garden of tears
My heavy load He chose to bear;
His heart with sorrow was torn,
‘Yet not My will but Yours,’ He said.

So let us learn how to serve,
And in our lives enthrone Him,
Each other’s needs to prefer--
For it is Christ we are serving.

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

We praise you, Risen Lord. You love this world, and you see all the suffering and all the beauty. Give us eyes to see both and let that transform us. Open our hearts to receive your right judgement. Enable us to act with your compassion.

 Thank you, Lord, for this congregation's generosity in the recent special offering. Thank you for those at Iglesia Emmanuel and others who are providing direct help. Thank you for the courage displayed by many this week in healthcare, education, civic leadership, service work and in the home.  Show us our parts to play with the gifts you have given us. Keep calling us to pursue the truth, and to act in love. We join Peter saying, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." Give us faith to follow you into this week.
On this Mother's Day, we thank you for mothers everywhere. We lift them to you in prayer, confident that you know, you love, and you will act.

 Give answer as we pray:  Lord, have mercy.

  • Lord, for the brokenness and evil that has been inflicted by the death of Ahmaud Arbery, we pray that your Kingdom would come and we pray _____________ [fill in what your heart longs for in this situation], Lord, have mercy.

  • For all those in public office, may they use their authority to safeguard the well-being and dignity of everyone, especially those most vulnerable at this time. Lord, have mercy.

  • For scientists and public health leaders, may you help them apply their skill with integrity to prevent and heal the effects of the virus. Lord, have mercy.

  • For leaders in business and finance, may they lead with wisdom and compassion, remembering all those who are affected by economic decisions.

  • For those who work and reside in places with limited resources for safe practices (nursing homes, military facilities, prisons), make a way to be as just as possible.

  • For those who are sick and alone (especially ______________________), may they know your healing, comfort and care. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who provide care (especially __________________), give them strength, courage, and rest. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who are grieving (especially ____________________), may they lament and receive comfort in your love. Lord, have mercy

  • For the church, that our willingness to love others in your name would bring hope to our world. Lord, have mercy.

Let us pray as Jesus taught us:  Our Father...

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Benediction

Song | Salvation Belongs to Our God

Salvation belongs to our God,
Who sits upon the throne,
And unto the Lamb....

Honor and Power and Strength
Be to our God forever and ever! (3x)
Amen!

And we the redeemed shall be strong
In purpose and unity,
Declaring aloud....

Honor and Power and Strength
Be to our God forever and ever! (3x)
