Call to Worship
Lord, as we worship at home, lift us up to You by the Holy Spirit,
and move us towards one another.
We are scattered; gather us in.
We ask in the name of our one Lord, Jesus Christ, Amen.
Song | “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
And order all things far and nigh;
To us the path of knowledge show
And cause us in her ways to go.
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
O come, Desire of Nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind:
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lowly exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! (repeat refrain)
The carol is full of names for the Messiah – in case you wanted to look them up, here are the references (remember, King James Version): Emmanuel (Isaiah 7:14); Dayspring (Luke 1:78); Key of David (Revelation 3:6-8); Desire of Nations (Haggai 2:7).
Scripture Reading | Exodus 16:1-15
16 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”
6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”
9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’”
10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.
11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.’”
13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.
Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.
Song | “I Shall Not Want” (duet)
From the love of my own comfort,
From the fear of having nothing,
From a life of worldly passions,
Deliver me, O God…
From the need to be understood,
From the need to be accepted,
From the fear of being lonely,
Deliver me, O God;
Deliver me, O God.
And I shall not want, I shall not want,
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want;
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want.
From the fear of serving others,
From the fear of death or trial,
From the fear of humility,
Deliver me, O God;
Deliver me, O God.
And I shall not want, I shall not want,
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want.
No, I shall not want, I shall not want,
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want.
When I taste Your goodness, I shall not want.

Call to Confession
God saves us from our sins. I hope that message sounds familiar to you. Another, perhaps less familiar, way of saying it is this: God saves us from ourselves. We are creatures bent on self-destruction. To be sure, the image of God comes glinting through every life. But we desperately fashion identities that, though they seem real, make us unreal—and even dead.
In confession, we say to God, “Deliver me from myself”. In the mercy of Christ, God gives us our life—and our true self—back again.
Prayer of Confession
Lord, we come to confess our sins, but we do not know ourselves. Our own lives are a fuzzy and unclear to us. We are deceived; in our self-deception, we destroy ourselves and other. Deliver us, Lord! Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, help us to see your true forgiveness and the truth about ourselves. By Your Holy Spirit, let truth lead to love for You and for our neighbors. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
Friends, it is true: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Passing the Peace
May the peace of the Lord be with you.
Response: And also with you
Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed
We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Song of Response | “Thy Mercy, My God”
Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song,
The joy of my heart and the boast of my tongue.
Thy free grace alone from the first to the last
Has won my affections and bound my heart fast.
Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here;
Sin would reduce me to utter despair;
But through Thy free goodness my spirit revives
And He that first made me still keeps me alive.
Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart,
Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart;
Dissolved by Thy goodness I fall to the ground
And weep for the praise of the mercy I’ve found.
Sweet Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own,
And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son;
All praise to the Spirit whose whisper divine
Seals mercy and pardon and righteousness mine!

Prayers of Thanksgiving & Intercession | Prayer Requests
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for giving us “bread from heaven” to eat; the life of Jesus Christ sustains us in this life and the next.
Teach us to want what is good.
Assure us that you know our needs today and every day.
When we are in need, help us not to grumble, but to cry out to you.
We pray for those in our congregation and in our community whose need is great. Provide for them, body and soul.
Show us our part to play, as many eat alone and many go hungry.
Hear us as we pray...
For our civic leaders, that they would use their authority to safeguard the well-being and dignity of all. Lord, have mercy.
For those who are sick and alone (especially ________), may they know your healing, comfort and care. Lord, have mercy.
For those who provide care (especially ________), give them strength, courage, and rest. Lord, have mercy.
For those who are grieving (especially ________), may they lament and receive hope because of you. Lord, have mercy.
For the church, that our willingness to love others as neighbors would witness to your love and power in us. Lord, have mercy.
Let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father...
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.
Benediction
Song | “He Who Watches Over You”
He who watches over you
Will never slumber nor sleep;
He who watches over you
Will never slumber nor sleep.
O My child, lay your burdens down,
Lay them at My feet.
He who watches over you
Will never slumber nor sleep.
