Invocation

Lord, Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory,  and it is ours to praise You.
Meet us--wherever we are this day--and by Your Holy Spirit loosen our lips to sing Your praise.
Help us to worship You; do this for our good and for Your glory, and for the sake of this aching world.
We ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Song | “All Who Are Thirsty” and “Spirit of the Living God”

All who are thirsty, all who are weak,
come to the fountain.
Dip your heart in the stream of life.
Let the pain and the sorrow be wash’d away
in the waves of His mercy
as deep cries out to deep.

Come, Lord Jesus, come. (4 times)

 Holy Spirit, come. (4 times)

 -----

Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.

Melt me,
Mold me,
Fill me,
Use me.

Spirit of the living God,
Fall afresh on me.

Scripture Reading | 1 Chronicles 29:10-13

David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,
“Praise be to you, Lord,
the God of our father Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.

Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give you thanks,
and praise your glorious name.

Song | “Friends in Faith”

Friends in faith who follow Jesus,
Hear the message of the cross:
Worldly wisdom now is folly;
Horldly riches count as loss.

Friends who strive to follow Jesus,
Walk the way that Jesus trod:
Spirit-filled, in human weakness,
Cast your cares upon our God.

We will arise and follow Jesus –
Lord of grace who calls us friend;
You are life and richest blessing,
Love divine, that knows no end!

Friends who dare to follow Jesus,
Trust and pray through darkest night:
Christ has conquered death and evil;
Christ is joy and life and light.

Firm in faith, now follow Jesus;
Live the gospel you have heard:
Be good news to all who know you,
Loving doers of the Word.

Words by Delores Dufner, 1993; refrain by Dave Stuntz.
Music from “Southern Harmony” 1835.

Call to Confession

On a typical Sunday morning, we would take a moment to kneel together and silently confess our sins.

When the room goes quiet  and we kneel next to our neighbors, it is a reminder that we are not in this alone: every one of us--from the most saintly to the most crude--depends on the mercy of God.

 As we are scattered across the city this morning, worshipping from home, it is still true: every one of us depends on the mercy of God.

In the name of Jesus, let us call one another to confess our sins and receive the Lord’s  forgiveness.

Prayer of Confession

Lord, we profess that the power and the Kingdom and the glory are yours; but  every day we labor in our own little kingdoms which are founded on the lie that we are in control. When others challenge our illusion, we get defensive or even aggressive.  Heavenly Father, In the name of Your son  Jesus, who was God himself but lived a life of humble obedience, we ask You to forgive us. May the knowledge that power and kingdom and glory belong to You, our God, free us, your people, to love. We ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, it is true: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.
Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Pastor David Dunderdale

The Lord's Prayer: For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.

Revelation 5:1-14
Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[ of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Song of Response | “The Solid Rock”

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

 On Christ the solid rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

 His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

 When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found:
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Words by Edward Mote, 1834.  Music by William Bradbury, 1863.

Praise be to you, Lord,  the God of Israel, the father of Jesus Christ.
Yours  is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.

Help us not to put our trust in earthly powers nor to be awed by human glory,

but teach us to see the glory of God in the crucified Christ and to depend on the power of the Spirit.

Make your church everywhere, and, especially Blacknall, a faithful outpost of Your Kingdom.

We pray together:

  • For our civic leaders, that they would use their authority to safeguard the well-being and dignity of all. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who are sick and alone (especially ________), may they know your healing, comfort and care. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who provide care (especially ________), give them strength, courage, and rest. Lord, have mercy.

  • For educators  (especially ________), give them wisdom and a renewed zeal to share what is good and true. Lord, have mercy.

  • For parents and families and for all those who care for children, (especially ________) equip them with patience and love. Lord, have mercy.

  • For those who are grieving (especially ________), may they lament and receive hope because of you. Lord, have mercy.

  • For the church, that our willingness to love others as neighbors would witness to your love and power in us. Lord, have mercy.

 Let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father...

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Benediction

Song | “Lavish Love, Abundant Beauty”

We are Yours, Eternal Father,
Off’ring body, mind and heart.
Take and use us to Your glory,
Form Yourself in every part.
Lord, Your love brings joy and gladness
Flowing forth within our soul –
May our very breath and being
Rise to You, their source and goal.
