Every Mother, Every Father

Every mother every father
Called to raise up sons or daughters
May your heart be patient
May your mind be clear
May our God be with you and calm your fears

Jesus Shall Reign

Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
does its successive journeys run,
his kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
till moons shall wax and wane no more.

Blessings abound where'er he reigns:
the prisoners leap to lose their chains,
the weary find eternal rest,
and all who suffer want are blest.

Let every creature rise and bring
the highest honors to our King,
angels descend with songs again,
and earth repeat the loud amen.

By Isaac Watts and John C. Hatton. Public Domain.

Invocation

Almighty God, we have gathered in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, as partakers of the first fruits of your inbreaking kingdom, and here you have promised to be with us. We bear witness to the reality of this kingdom and that where King Jesus reigns, those entrapped in the prisons of the world, the flesh, and the devil are set free. Father, send us your Spirit to illuminate our hearts so that we might confess our sin; to illuminate your Word so that we might understand it; and to provide for us at this table, so that we might feed on Christ’s body and blood by faith. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, amen.

Responsive Scripture Reading

(read responsively in bold):
Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32

Psalm 102:1-17

Hear my prayer, Lord; let my cry for help come to you.
Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress.

Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.
For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers.

My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food.
In my distress I groan aloud and am reduced to skin and bones.

I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.
I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof.

All day long my enemies taunt me; those who rail against me use my name as a curse.

For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears
because of your great wrath, for you have taken me up and thrown me aside.

My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.

But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations.

You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her;
the appointed time has come.

For her stones are dear to your servants; her very dust moves them to pity.

The nations will fear the name of the Lord, all the kings of the earth will revere your glory.

For the Lord will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.
He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.

Call to Confession

We do not have come before the Lord all put together and strong, competent and self-assured. In fact, we dare not do so. There is no coming before the Lord to say , “I’m doing fine.” To be in the presence of God is to be, at once, undone, and made whole; broken and put back together. There, let us before Him with confidence, to kneel and confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession

Turn your ear to us Lord, and answer us when we call. You are a God of compassion and pity for those in distress. You know our weakness, in the flesh and in the spirit. You know that we are content with anger and tempted to despair. Forgive us, for we want so much less than the life for which you made us. In the name of your son Jesus, who opened the way of mercy and hope through his own weakness on the cross, release us from sin and raise us up to live in Christ, by the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Fear not, little flock. Our heavenly Father knows what we need: In the name of Jesus, we are forgiven.

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.
Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon Text: Mark 5:1-20

They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

All Who Are Thirsty

All who are thirsty,
all who are weak,
Come to the fountain,
Dip your heart in the stream of life;
Let the pain and the sorrow
Be washed a-way
In the waves of His mercy,
As deep cries out to deep (we sing...)

Come, Lord Jesus, come

Holy Spirit, come

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Would you like to share a prayer request? Submit your request here.

(As you pray the following petitions, you are encouraged to pause and lift to the Lord particular concerns or people or events. Read prayer requests from Blacknall members and ministry partners here.)

Jesus, you are the Lord of all creation. You are stronger than death; you are greater than every power that opposes us. You came and lived among us, crazed as we are, to set us free.

Together we say “Thank you.”

We ask You, Lord, deliver us. We are bound by illness, in body and mind, desperate and lonely. Release us from the grip of sin and its powers; make us aware of your merciful presence in our midst.  We pray for all those who need your tender care today.

We pray for your church. Help us to recognize your healing power at work in our world. Remind us of the many ways you have given us freedom. Prompt us to share what you have done for us.

We give thanks for those missionaries, sent out to tell of your mercy. We pray that their words would be accompanied by demonstrations of your power and love.

We pray together, as you taught us...

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Jesus Draw Us Ever Nearer

Jesus draw us ever nearer
As we labor through the storm
You have called us to this passage
And we’ll follow though we’re worn

May this journey bring a blessing
May we rise on wings of faith
And at the end of our hearts’ testing
With Your likeness let us wake

Jesus guide us through the tempest
Keep our spirits staid and sure
When the midnight meets the morning
Let us love You even more

Let the treasures of the trial
Form within us as we go
And at the end of this long passage
Let us leave them at Your throne

Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness

Praise the One who breaks the darkness
With a liberating light.
Praise the One who frees the pris'ners,
Turning blindness into sight.
Praise the One who preached the gospel,
Healing ev'ry dread disease,
Calming storms and feeding thousands
With the very bread of peace.

Praise the One who blessed the children
With a strong yet gentle word.
Praise the One who drove out demons
With a piercing, two edged sword.
Praise the one who brings cool water
To the desert's burning sand.
From this well comes living water,
Quenching thirst in ev'ry land.

Praise the One true love incarnate:
Christ who suffered in our place.
Jesus died and rose for many
That we may know God by grace.
Let us sing for joy and gladness,
Seeing what our God has done.
Praise the one redeeming glory;
Praise the One who makes us one.

Mighty God We Thank and Praise You

Mighty God we thank and praise you
For this meal this bread of life
Precious blood and body broken
From your Son our Savior Christ
In these myst’ries you assure us
We are members of your Son
Heirs of your eternal Kingdom
With all faithful people one

Humbly now we ask you Father
In your grace to make us strong
That with all the saints before us
In good works we may press on
Send us out to love and serve you
Send us out to sing your praise
Father Son and Holy Spirit
Power and glory to your name

Amen
