Prelude | Worship Band
Jesus, savior, pilot me

Jesus, Savior, pilot me,
Over life's tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll,
Hiding rock and treach'rous shoal;
Chart and compass come from Thee: Savior, pilot me!

As a mother stills her child,
Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boist'rous waves obey Thy will,
When Thou say'st to them, "Be still!"
Wondrous Sov'reign of the sea,
Saviour, pilot me!

When at last I near the shore,
And the fearful breakers roar
'Twixt me and the peaceful rest,
Then, while leaning on Thy breast,
May I hear Thee say to me,
"I will pilot thee!"

Love Lifted Me (Jesus Saves)

I was sinking deep in sin
Far from the peaceful shore
So deeply stained within
Sinking to rise no more

But the Master of the sea
Heard my despairing cry
From the waters lifted me
Now safe am I

Love lifted me
Love lifted me
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me

All my heart to Him I give
Ever to Him I'll cling
In His blessed presence live
Ever His praises sing

Souls in danger look above
Jesus completely saves
He will lift you by His love
Out of the angry waves

Jesus saves, Jesus saves
He will lift you from the
Crashing waves, crashing waves
He will never leave you

Invocation

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit so that we might rightly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord, amen.

Responsive Scripture Reading

(read responsively in bold):
Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—
    those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered from the lands,
    from east and west, from north and south.

Some went out on the sea in ships;
    they were merchants on the mighty waters.
They saw the works of the Lord,
    his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
    that lifted high the waves.
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril their courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper;
    the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love
    and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people
    and praise him in the council of the elders.

Call to Confession

Each week we kneel together to confess our sins to God. But what if this week (or next week, or fifty weeks from now) you find yourself caught in a storm: overwhelmed by sorrow, or grief, or fear, or disappointment? It can be hard to confess our sins in a storm. We don’t usually bring these storms upon ourselves. We stand in need of comfort, not condemnation.

But still: each week we kneel together to confess our sins to God. Why? Storms can bring with them their own particular temptations to sin: to despair, to take compromising shortcuts in search of safety, to close in on ourselves, to consider our enemies unredeemable.

But confessing these sins—or any other sins—doesn’t add condemnation to our sorrow. To confess our sins is to place our trust in God, who is good, whose love endures forever, who gathers us up from wherever we have wandered. He will still our storms to a whisper and he will hurl our sins into the depths of the sea. Come, let us kneel and confess our sins to this good and trustworthy God.

Prayer of Confession

Lord, help us to confess our sins to you, even when we are troubled and afraid. We have been faithless, but you are always faithful. Forgive us and rescue us, we pray. Help us to look to you with hope and trust because of your great mercy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, hear the word of the Lord: “I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud, and your sins like the morning mist.” In Jesus Christ you are forgiven!

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.
Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word |
Pastor dave dunderdale

Sermon Text: Mark 4:35-41

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Communion Song | Worship Band
Fairest Lord Jesus

Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature
O Thou of God and man the son
Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor
Thou my soul's glory, joy, and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands
Robed in the blooming garb of spring
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight
And fair the twinkling starry host
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heav'n can boast.

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Would you like to share a prayer request? Submit your request here.

((As you pray the following petitions, you are encouraged to pause and lift to the Lord particular concerns or people or events. Read prayer requests from Blacknall members and ministry partners here.)

Lord, you ask us to have faith. And so we come before you in prayer, trusting that you see us, you know us, and you care for us.

We pray for our little church. You have searched us, and you know us; you hem us in, behind and before. Give us wisdom and joy, unity and integrity in this time of transition. We pray especially for our pastors, Goodie and Dave, and for the work of the Pastoral Transition Team.

We pray for your Church throughout the world. You search us and test us; you see if there is any offensive way in us, and you lead us in the way everlasting. Give us urgency for your mission and your justice, a hunger and a thirst for righteousness. We pray especially for Leadership Edge, the Kasali family and the DRC, and for Families Moving Forward.

We pray for those who are sick. You knit their bodies together in their mothers’ womb and pronounced them fearfully and wonderfully made. Give them comfort and healing, energy and rest. We pray especially for those battling the coronavirus.

We pray for those who are moving. You promise to guide them and to hold them fast, even on the far side of the sea. Give them peace and patience, a sense of purpose and a new community.

Lord, you know all our anxious thoughts and invite us to cast them on you because you care for us. We do so now, silently naming our fears and concerns…

And together we pray as you have taught us:

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Great is Thy Faithfulness

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
there is no shadow of turning with thee;
thou changest not; thy compassions, they fail not.
as thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided.
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
join with all nature in manifold witness
to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow -
blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Thy Mercy My God

Thy mercy my God is the theme of my song
The joy of my heart and the boast of my tongue
Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last
Hath won my affection and bound my soul fast

Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here
Sin soon would reduce me to utter despair
But through Thy free goodness my spirits revive
And He that first made me still keeps me alive

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart
Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart
Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground
And weep to the praise of the mercy I've found

Alleluia
Alleluia Allelu

Great Father of mercies! Thy goodness I own
And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son
All praise to the Spirit whose whisper divine
Seals mercy and pardon and righteousness mine!

Mighty God We Thank and Praise You

Mighty God we thank and praise you
For this meal this bread of life
Precious blood and body broken
From your Son our Savior Christ
In these myst’ries you assure us
We are members of your Son
Heirs of your eternal Kingdom
With all faithful people one

Humbly now we ask you Father
In your grace to make us strong
That with all the saints before us
In good works we may press on
Send us out to love and serve you
Send us out to sing your praise
Father Son and Holy Spirit
Power and glory to your name

Amen
