Jesus My All to Heaven Has Gone (A Hymn for Ascension)

Jesus, my all, to heav’n has gone,
Glory, hallelujah
He whom I fix my hopes upon
Glory, hallelujah

REFRAIN
I want a seat in paradise,
Glory, hallelujah
I love that union never dies,
Glory, hallelujah

His track I see and I’ll pursue,
Glory, hallelujah
The narrow way till Him I view
Glory, hallelujah

Lo! Glad I come, and Thou dear Lamb,
Glory, hallelujah
Shall take me to Thee as I am,
Glory, hallelujah

A Light Upon My Path (Psalm 119)

Refrain
Your Word is a lamp
For my feet, a light upon my path

Heavy yoked and deplored
Give me life, O gracious Lord,
According to your living Word!
I will praise you willingly
With the mouth you gave to me,
Come and forge me
with your Holy Word

Though my life, weak and frail,
I could lose on this trail
I will not stray from the Way.
Though the world comes for me,
Comes to snare with treachery,
I will never leave the Way.

Invocation

Gracious Father, you have opened the doors of salvation and welcomed us in by the blood of your son, Jesus Christ. He is the light of the world, the living Word of God, a bright witness to your inbreaking Kingdom.

Father send your Holy Spirit to illuminate the dark corners of our hearts and to brighten the path before us, so that we may rightly hear your word, rest at Christ's table, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Responsive Scripture Reading | Psalm 119:105-112

Your word is a lamp for my feet,

    a light on my path.

I have taken an oath and confirmed it,

    that I will follow your righteous laws.

I have suffered much;

    preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.

Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,

    and teach me your laws.

Though I constantly take my life in my hands,

    I will not forget your law.

The wicked have set a snare for me,

    but I have not strayed from your precepts.

Your statutes are my heritage forever;

    they are the joy of my heart.

My heart is set on keeping your decrees

    to the very end.

Call to Confession

A teacher of the law approached Jesus and asked, “Which is the greatest commandment in the law?”. The question was intended as a test, but Jesus did not hesitate; he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt 22:36-29).

Who among us could say that we have loved in this way? Who among us could say that we have loved God with all we are and loved our neighbors as ourselves?

We have broken God’s good law, but in Christ, God has fulfilled the law for us. This is our twin confession.

Come, let us kneel before the Lord.

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, Your law marks out the way of love, but we have taken other paths: we have bowed down before other gods; we have used Your name to further our own agenda; we have not marked Your sabbath rest.  We have dishonored our parents, hated our brothers and sisters, misused our bodies, taken from others, failed to tell the truth, and lusted for more.

Forgive us, our heavenly Father.

By Your Holy Spirit, remind us that Jesus lived and died in perfect love on our behalf; in His light, lead us on the way of love. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, Hear the good news: In Jesus Christ you are forgiven.

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Pastor Allan Poole

Mark 4.21-25

21 He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? 22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”

24 “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more. 25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Would you like to share a prayer request? Submit your request here.

(As you pray the following petitions, you are encouraged to pause and lift to the Lord particular concerns or people or events. Read prayer requests from Blacknall members and ministry partners here.)

Jesus, You proclaimed to us: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

We marvel at Your power; we thank You for Your invitation; we praise You for this hope.

For those being confirmed in the faith today, we thank you, and we pray that you would increase their faith and hope and love.

For those tasked with sharing Your word through missions and the ministries of the church, we pray, help them to be faithful. Keep them from temptation to manipulate; help them trust You to bear fruit from Your word.

For those who rejoice, we rejoice with them. Shield them in their joy.

For those who mourn, we mourn with them. Comfort them in their weakness. We pray especially for those who grieve, for those who are ill and infirm, for those who are dying. We pray for those who are afraid and in need.

Lord, Your light shines in the darkness; help us not to shrink back into the shadows but walk in the light of life.

We pray together as You taught us...

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Be Thou My Vision

1. Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

2. Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

3. Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

4. High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Build My Life

Worthy of ev'ry song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You

Jesus the name above ev'ry other name
Jesus the only one who could ever save
Worthy of ev'ry breath we could ever breathe
We live for You
We live for You

Holy there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
And show me who You are
And fill me with Your heart
And lead me in Your love to those around me

I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

Alleluia

Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia!

Father we praise you as Lord
All of the earth gives you worship
For your majesty
Fills the heavens, fills the earth!
