Invocation

As we gather on this Palm Sunday, we, your would-be disciples, long to be among those who, by the power of your Holy Spirit, name you as our King, and who do not turn away.  Meet us, we pray, in our worship this morning.  Graft us into living Vine; feed us with the nutrients of your Word, and strengthen us with a deepening vision of your loving faithfulness that empowers us to serve you with growing conviction and joy.  In the name of our Crucified Lord, Amen

Song |  All Glory, Laud, and Honor

All glory, laud, and honor
to you, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel
and David's royal Son,
now in the Lord's name coming,
the King and Blessed One.

The company of angels
is praising you on high;
and we with all creation
in chorus make reply.
The people of the Hebrews
with palms before you went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before you we present.

To you before your passion
they sang their hymns of praise;
to you, now high exalted,
our melody we raise.
As you received their praises,
accept the prayers we bring,
for you delight in goodness,
O good and gracious King!

Scripture Reading | Zechariah 9:9-12

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
    righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
    and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
    and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
    His rule will extend from sea to sea
    and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
    I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
    even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

Song | The Servant King

From heaven you came helpless babe
Entered our world, your glory veiled
Not to be served but to serve
And give Your life that we might live

Chorus

This is our God, The Servant King
He calls us now to follow Him
To bring our lives as a daily offering
Of worship to The Servant King

Come see His hands and His feet
The scars that speak of sacrifice
Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered

So let us learn how to serve,
And in our lives enthrone Him;
Each other’s needs to prefer,
For it is Christ we’re serving.

Call to Confession

Those who know the story of Holy Week remember that on this day, Palm Sunday, the pilgrims in Jerusalem welcomed Jesus, even declaring him as their King.  And yet, by the following Friday, the crowd was crying “Crucify him!”  Can we be so fickle in our affections?  So inconstant in our convictions and commitments? If a man of such bold declarations as Peter can find himself humiliated by his betrayal of the One he had sworn to follow even unto death, dare we think more of ourselves?  Let us confess our weakness to the Father, and look to him with a greater trust in his provision, forgiveness, and grace.

Prayer of Confession

Merciful Father, we do not know our own weaknesses, the flaws in our faith that may prove to be mortal in challenging circumstances.  We confess that we each have our vulnerabilities, some that betray our arrogance, others that disclose our fears.  Forgive us Lord, and meet us in those moments of failure with a grace that surprises and invites us into a relationship of greater trust and obedience.  We ask in the name of Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Friends, the Lord knows our weaknesses and failures.  He knows that we underestimate the cost of our disobedience; this is why he followed the path of the cross, that in his dying and resurrection, he would bear the weight of that disobedience, and defeat those powers that would keep us enslaved.  In His Name, the name of Jesus Christ, I tell you:  You are forgiven.

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Pastor David Dunderdale

John 12:1-19
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

“Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,“Hosanna!”“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
    see, your king is coming,
    seated on a donkey’s colt.” 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

Song of Response |  Ride On, Ride On, in Majesty

Ride on, ride on in majesty!
Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry;
O Savior meek, pursue your road
with palms and scattered garments strowed.

Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die:
O Christ, your triumphs now begin
o'er captive death and conquered sin.

Ride on to die,
Ride on to die,
And take, O Christ, your power and reign!

Ride on, ride on in majesty!
The winged squadrons of the sky
look down with sad and wond'ring eyes
to see th'approaching sacrifice.

Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die;
bow your meek head to mortal pain,
then take, O God, your pow'r and reign.

Heavenly Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, grace has been obtained for our world.  With confidence in your mercy and love, we pray for the needs of all, and especially for your Church, that all may respond to your grace.

We pray for those in need, for the poor, the sick, the hungry, the elderly, those who live in fear, and those in need of work, that you might provide healing and relief and hope.

We pray for those who do not know you, or who have turned from you out of pride or fear or trouble, that your grace might draw them into your life by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We pray for the nations of the world, especially where there is the abuse of power, or the desperate need for resources, for the leaders of our and all the nations, that you would grant them wisdom and concern for the good of all.

And we pray for Christians throughout the world, that we may all be faithful witnesses to the saving power and life of Jesus Christ.

And now, give us the grace to pray as our Lord taught us:

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Benediction

Song | Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord
God of power and might
Heaven and earth are full of your glory
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest!
