Invocation

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
    your justice like the great deep. (Ps. 36:5-6)

How great are you, Oh Lord!

As we come to worship, prepare our souls to sing your praise: loose our lips, enlarge our hearts, and give us ears to hear You.

Do this, we pray, by the power of Your Spirit at work within us, to the glory of Christ’s Holy Name. Amen.

Song | 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Bless the Lord O my soul O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up it's a new day dawning
It's time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger
Your name is great and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore

Worship Your holy name
Lord I'll worship Your holy name

Sing like never before O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
Worship Your holy name
Worship Your holy name

Scripture Reading | Psalm 103

Praise the Lord, my soul;
    all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The Lord works righteousness
    and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,
    his deeds to the people of Israel:
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
    slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse,
    nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
    or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
    so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
    he remembers that we are dust.
15 The life of mortals is like grass,
    they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,
    and its place remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
    the Lord’s love is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18 with those who keep his covenant
    and remember to obey his precepts.

19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
    and his kingdom rules over all.

20 Praise the Lord, you his angels,
    you mighty ones who do his bidding,
    who obey his word.
21 Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts,
    you his servants who do his will.
22 Praise the Lord, all his works
    everywhere in his dominion.

Song | From the Depths of Woe

From depths of woe I raise to thee
the voice of lamentation;
Lord, turn a gracious ear to me
and hear my supplication:
if thou iniquities dost mark,
our secret sins and misdeeds dark,
O who shall stand before thee?
O who shall stand before thee?

Therefore my trust is in the Lord,
and not in my own merit;
on him my soul shall rest, his Word
upholds my fainting spirit:
his promised mercy is my fort,
my comfort, and my sweet support;
I wait for it with patience.
I wait for it with patience.

Though great our sins and sore our woes
his grace much more aboundeth;
his helping love no limit knows,
our utmost need it soundeth.
Our Shepherd good and true is he,
who will at last his Israel free
from all their sin and sorrow.
from all their sin and sorrow.
from all their sin and sorrow.

Call to Confession

What kind of God do we encounter when we come to confess our sins? A God who is compassionate and gracious, who will not treat us as our sins deserve (Ps. 103).  The Lord does not take advantage of us in our weakness; God takes no delight in holding a grudge. He desires, always, to release us from bondage and to lead us into life. With this confidence, let us kneel and confess our sins.

Prayer of Confession

Oh Lord, our Lord, you abound in steadfast love and faithfulness; your forgiveness knows no end.  By Your Holy Spirit, help us to repent and believe Your good news. Forgives us for our unbelief. Forgive us for following the devices and desire of our own hearts. Forgive us for stubbornly clinging to the way of life we wanted. We wish, instead, to follow Jesus, whose life and death has opened the way for us to live anew. In Your mercy, let us begin again this day, for our good and for Your glory. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
    so far has he removed our transgressions from us.  (Ps. 103:11-12)

Beloved, it is true: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Passing the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be with you.

            Response: And also with you

Affirmation of Faith | Apostles Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word | Pastor David Dunderdale

Mark 1:14-20

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Song of Response |  Jesus Calls Us O'er the Tumult

Jesus calls us o'er the tumult
of our life's wild, restless sea;
day by day his sweet voice soundeth,
saying "Christian, follow me."

As, of old, apostles heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for his dear sake.

Chorus

Jesus calls us; by thy mercies,
Savior, may we hear thy call,
give our hearts to thine obedience,
serve and love thee best of all.

Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world's golden store,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying "Christian, love me more."

In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
"Christian, love me more than these."

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Would you like to share a prayer request? Submit your request here.

(As you pray the following petitions, you are encouraged to pause and lift to the Lord particular concerns or people or events. Read prayer requests from Blacknall members and ministry partners here.)

Lord, we have heard your good news, as it is written in the gospel, and we see in the life of Jesus Christ that “The Kingdom of God has come near!”

We rejoice, for you have not left us to our own devices. We thank you for making your righteous Kingdom manifest in the world.

We want to follow You together. Help us to hear you calling us; help us to know what it is we must lay down and leave behind.

We pray for those among us who are weary and heavy laden, especially those who are dealing with illness or loss. May they find rest in You, and companions in us.

We ask you to strengthen our congregation, in this time of transition, uncertainty, and grief.  Thank you for our church partners and many partners in ministry who spur us on.

Grant us your peace, and make us steadfast in sharing the message of your good news. Give us the privilege of seeing others turn and follow you, and nurture the seed of faith at work in each one of us.

We pray together, now, as you taught us...

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.

Benediction

Song | Lord Who Throughout These 40 Days

Lord, who throughout these forty days
For us did fast and pray,
Teach us to overcome our sins,
And close by You to stay.

As You with Satan did contend
And did the vict'ry win,
O give us strength in You to fight,
In You to conquer sin.

As You did hunger and did thirst,
So teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self, and only live
By Your most holy word.
