The Blacknall Film Collective and our Congo Leadership Team will host a screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary “Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat” on Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 - 9:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Bring a snack to share.
The film tells the story of why, in 1960, legendary jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, and others were deployed to Congo as "cultural ambassadors" by the U.S. State Department. Unbeknownst to them, their tours served as a cover for geopolitical operations in Africa — distracting the public while the CIA and others engineered the overthrow and assassination of Congo’s first democratically elected prime minister, Patrice Lumumba.
