The Mt. Level Community Partnership for Racial Justice is sponsoring a Juneteenth Celebration in conjunction with the Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church picnic on Saturday, June 17 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and have invited us to join.
This picnic will be a family fun time with food, music, a speaker, Djembe Drum Circles, games, and activities for children. Food will be served at noon. Please bring your own lawn chairs.
Registration is not required to attend, but is helpful for planning, so if you think you might come, please register. If you have questions or would like to join up with other Blacknallites attending, please contact Blacknall member Erin Miller.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining "June" and "nineteenth", it is the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas. Early celebrations date to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. Juneteenth is usually celebrated on the third Saturday in June.
The Mt. Level Community Partnership for Racial Justice unites churches and individuals to bring about racial justice in our community and our world. Blacknall is among the four representatives, Durham-based churches and organizations, that currently comprise this partnership.
