Campus & National Ministries
Since the days of Bob Henderson, former pastor, some 40 years ago, Blacknall church has been committed to ministry at area universities, where young people are searching for they know not what. This outreach began with supporting staff with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and Campus Crusade for Christ at Duke. We now support ministry at Duke, UNC, NCCU, Shaw, and St. Augustine as well as staff in Raleigh, and work in all the Durham, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough high schools.
For some years as local supported staff moved to other areas, we continued with support and we changed the name of the outreach committee from “Campus” to “Campus/National Ministries.”
The following are the Campus Ministries and the missionaries currently supported by Blacknall:
Cherrie Henry, Presbyterian Student Ministries at Duke. This fellowship offers a hospitable place for students to feel connected to the church. Summer mission trips are a highlight for them.
Young Life, is a ministry to tell high school kids about Jesus in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough.
John Hamilton, The Navigators at Duke. John is currently partnering with Duke’s international students, with the Christian Medical and Dental Society, with Navigator military colleagues, and with a Ukrainian organization. The Navigator mission seeks to deepen the lay-person’s experience with the Bible to train them to accurately hear God’s voice through it.
Dean Storelli, Navigators staff at Duke, a fellowship for support of Christian students who are committed to communicate the gospel to their peers through events and relationship building.
Scott Hawkins, ISI (International Students, Inc.) at Duke, a ministry of friendship and witness to international students who are in Durham. Scott and his wife Jenny befriend these strangers to our culture, helping them to make Durham their home—everything from finding furniture for their apartments to cooking lessons. Scott and Jenny do these things graciously, demonstrating the love of Christ (“for I was a stranger, and you took me in”) to each one they encounter.
Jennifer Hagin, InterVarsity at UNC, Chapel Hill.
John Hawkins, Leadership Edge, an organization that is effective in providing students with leadership training that they will need to proactively face their futures. The programs, based on examples and precepts given in the Bible, are available to both Christian and non-Christian students.
Jim Herman, InterVarsity at UNC, Chapel Hill.
Steve Hinkle, InterVarsity Grad and professional Student Ministries at Duke, a fellowship for support of Christian students who are committed to communicate the gospel to their peers through events and relationship building.
Terri Shell, area director for InterVarsity, living in Raleigh.
Katie Rawson, regional director for InterVarsity, living in Raleigh.
Fred Williams, InterVarsity staff to Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the Blue Ridge Region.
Hunter Lambeth, Young Life Work Trips, a short-term missions ministry that deals specifically with the region of Latin America. Overall the work trip experience has proven to be a landmark in the life of Christian disciples; deepening their faith, strengthening their convictions, making them more aware of God’s mandate that we care for the world’s less fortunate.
Reginald Roberson, Every Nation Ministries, Campus Director @ NCCU, Duke and Campus Minister at UNC Chapel Hill – outreach and discipleship.
Hank Tarlton, Grad InterVarsity at UNC, Chapel Hill.
Jen West, InterVarsity at NC State University.
Pray for these people and these ministries. They are on the “frontline” and they are under attack from the Evil One. There is also an opportunity to serve these local missionaries through the Campus/National Missions Committee. There is much we need to be doing for them, but we lack the committee members to do an effective job. Will you pray and see if God may be calling you to this support ministry?
