What is Alpha?

The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith.  It’s relaxed, friendly and fun.  Participants enjoy a great meal, laugh, and learn together in a low key environment.  Listen, discuss, discover, and ask anything.  Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile.  It is supported by all the main Christian denominations.

What’s involved?

Participants meet once a week for 10 weeks in a small group setting.  Each week, groups gather for about 2 ½ hours.  The evening will start out with dinner and a chance to get to know one another.  After dinner and some time together, a short video will be shown.  The video addresses a different topic each week.  Some topics include:

  • Who is Jesus?
  • Why did Jesus die?
  • Why and how do I pray?
  • How does God lead us?
  • What about the church?

The video will be followed by a time of discussion.  Everyone is encouraged to contribute and ask questions as they feel comfortable.  The emphasis is on exploration and discovery in an informal setting.

Where and when is Alpha taking place?

Blacknall church will be hosting Alpha in various Durham and Chapel Hill homes, on various nights of the week, from 6:30-9:00pm.  Current locations and days offered are:

  • Durham: Lochside (Wednesday)
  • Durham: Hillandale Commons (Sunday)

To view a map of all Alpha site locations, see: Alpha site map. If there is enough interest, a group may be offered at Blacknall church with childcare on Wednesday night.

An introductory evening will be held the week of January 10, 2010 in each of the homes.  The 10-week sessions will begin the week of January 17 and run each week through the week of March 25, 2010.

You don’t have to come to the whole course – just come along for the first night and see what you think.  No pressure.
